About Our Office ...
a brief history ~ The Mica Office was originally part of the Department of Lands, Pend Oreille Lake Office, and was located on River Avenue near North Idaho College. The Mica Office moved to its current location in the mid 1970s.
About Our Staff ...
Mike Denney is the Area Manager/Fire Warden at the Mica Supervisory Area Office. Mike has worked at the Mica office in various positions since 1991. Prior to that time, he worked at our Priest Lake office starting in 1984. Mike is responsible for planning, coordinating, administration and supervision of Area activities. These activities include, but are not limited to, forest management, fire management, forest improvement, forest practices administration, range, minerals, special leases and navigable waters.
Gary Darrington is the Resource Supervisor/Fire Warden for the Mica Area. Gary started with the Idaho Department of Lands in 1985 as a seasonal Resource Aide on the Priest Lake Supervisory Area. In 1988 he transferred to Payette Lakes Supervisory Area as a Resource Technician and later was a full-time forester in the Timber Program. In 1993 he transferred to the Cataldo office as a Senior Resource Manager–Assistant Fire Warden, where he stayed until 2001. He was involved in the Fire and Hazard Management programs and helped in the Forest Practices Act and Timber Programs. After a short hiatus, in October 2004 Gary returned to the Department in Cataldo as the Fire Warden and in January 2006, Gary transferred to the Mica Area.
Shane O'Shea is the Forest Practices Advisor and Private Forestry Specialist for the Mica Supervisory Area. Shane's duties include monitoring logging operations on private land to ensure compliance with the rules of the Idaho Forest Practices Act. He is also responsible for providing forest management assistance to private landowners, including various forestry cost-sharing programs.
Scott Rider is also a Timber Resource Manager at the Mica office. Scott is responsible for all phases of timber sales on state endowment lands in the Mica Supervisory Area. He also is involved in various forest improvement projects and fire management.
Maxine Sopher has been the Administrative Assistant at the Mica Office since 1987. Maxine is the receptionist, accounts payable and receivable manager, personnel manager and purchasing agent.
Carl Washburn is a Specialist, Navigable Waters/Submerged Lands Leasing. Carl is responsible for administering all Lake Protection Act activities in Kootenai County and all commercial, community, city, county and non-navigational encroachment activity in the Pend Oreille drainage. Carl also administers the Submerged Lands Leasing Program in Bonner and Kootenai Counties. Carl provides training and assistance to the department's Navigable Waters and Submerged Lands Leasing staff for the entire state. Carl is performing a statewide encroachment inventory of the State's navigable waters, in which digital photos and GPS point data is captured to be linked to an encroachment database.
