Coordinator's Column

by David Stephenson, Community Forestry Coordinator

Advisory Councils Joining Forces -
The new Idaho Lands Resource Coordinating Council ...

My summer 2010 column discussed the recently completed Idaho Statewide Forest Resource Strategy, now called the Idaho Forest Action Plan (FAP). FAP identifies key threats to and benefits from forests in Idaho – from Main Street to mountaintop – and strategies to address these issues with our forestry assistance programs. These programs include: Urban and Community Forestry, State Fire Assistance, Forest Stewardship, Forest Health, and Forest Legacy.
In the past, these programs have operated independent of each other, even when issues on which they focus overlap and transcend the boundaries of cities and surrounding forestlands. Wildfire risk, forest health threats, and potential benefits to air and water quality are examples of these. Integrating efforts between programs on such issues is a key strategy of FAP, as it increases efficiency of limited staff and resources and leads to improved forest health.
