About Our Office
The Craig Mountain Supervisory Area office is located in Craigmont, Idaho. The Area's duties include natural resource management of state-owned lands, as well as regulatory responsibilities, including hazardous fuel management, private land forest practices and fire suppression. The area encompasses approximately 450,000 acres of fire protection and includes the Lower Salmon and Hells Canyon. There are 43,504 acres of state endowment lands, of which 24,296 acres are timbered. The Area has seven permanent employees, four eight-month employees and averages ten summer employees (smoke chasers).
Meet Our Staff

Jay has been the Area Manager for the Craig Mountain Area Office since 2008. He started with the Department in 1993 as a Resource Manager, Range for the Payette Lakes Area. In 1998, he became a Lands and Range Specialist at Payette Lakes and within a year was promoted to a Resource Supervisor position. In 2005, Jay transferred to the Southwest Area office as a Resource Supervisor in Range, Lands, Minerals and Commercial programs. He is a University of Idaho graduate with a BS in Range Resource Management.

Sam started as a temporary Office Specialist at the Craig Mountain Area Office in 2007. That same year she graduated with an AAS in Business Management from LCSC. Winter of 2009, she left the department to work for the Cottonwood Community Federal Credit Union as a Member Service Representative. Sam accepted the Administrative Assistant position back at the Craig Mountain Area Office in January 2011.

Ashley started her career with the Department of Lands in May of 2011. Before, Ashley was a dispatcher for the Idaho County Sheriff’s Office. She is currently working towards getting her AAS in Business Management at Lewis Clark State College.
Mark Smith, Resource Foreman - email: msmith@idl.idaho.gov
Mark has served as the area helicopter manager since 2006, following a 28 year-long career specializing in Fire & Aviation Management. Mark originally developed his interest in wildland fire while attending Lassen Forestry College, 1972-76, and since has worked on various National Forests throughout the Northwest, including the Nez Perce, Clearwater, & Idaho Panhandle. During this time he has served a total of 15 years as an Air Support Group Supervisor on several Incident Management Teams, which included numerous complex incident assignments throughout the USA. Mark is committed to sharing his extensive experience in teaching a new generation of firefighters the ‘tricks of the trade’ -- and the essentials of safety. This year marks his 34th consecutive year as a professional wildland firefighter.

Gene began his career in 1991 at the Ponderosa Area Office as a Resource Aide. In 1993, he transferred to the Maggie Creek Area Office as a Resource technician, and was promoted to permanent status in 1994. He worked there until 2008 when he relocated to the Craig Mountain Area Office as a Resource Specialist, Forestry.

JeAnn has worked for the Craig Mountain Area since 1991, starting as a seasonal fire fighter. She has since done numerous duties for the Area. In 2010, she became a permanent Resource Specialist, Forestry. JeAnn’s primary duty is timber management but she also covers the Area’s lands, range and agricultural issues as well as managing the Area’s noxious weed program.

Rob started his career with the Idaho Department of Lands in 1996 at the Craig Mountain Area Office as a smoke chaser. Rob is a Highland (Craigmont) High School graduate and received his Forestry degree from the University of Idaho in 2002. He worked as a Forest Resource Technician at the Maggie Creek Area and the Clearwater Area offices until his promotion to permanent status as a Resource Specialist, Forestry in 2005, working for the Craig Mountain Area. In 2008 Rob was promoted to his current position as the Fire Warden here at Craigmont.

Tim began his career on the Kootenai National Forest in 1978 working in fire and fuels for the Forest Service. He was a McCall Smokejumper from 1984 to 1986. In 1987, he worked for the Priest Lake Supervisory Area as a smoke chaser. In 1988 he went back to the FS as a Nez Perce Smokejumper in Grangeville through 2000. In 2001, he accepted a permanent position as a Fuels Specialist on the Superior National Forest in Minnesota. In 2005, he moved back to Idaho and returned to the Department of Lands in Craigmont as a Resource Specialist, Fire (Assistant Warden).
Jeremiah Miller, Resource Specialist, Fire (Assistant Warden) - email: jmiller@idl.idaho.gov
Jeremiah started with the Idaho Department of Lands on the Craig Mountain fire crew in 2007. After completing his forestry degree from Ohio State University, he returned to Craigmont as a Forest Resource Technician. Jeremiah has worked as a Resource Foreman and Helicopter Manager for the Craig Mountain district, until his promotion to permanent status (Assistant Warden) in 2011. Jeremiah’s duties include managing the helicopter contract, rural cooperator, FEPP equipment management and the hazard management program.

Clark has over 25 years of experience in timber management with the Department of Lands. He is responsible for the Forest Practices issues, Stewardship Forestry Programs and provides free private forestry assistance.
Scott Bonk, Resource Technician, Forestry - email: sbonk@idl.idaho.gov
Scott completed his BS degree in Forestry at Michigan Technological University in 2009. He has worked as a ‘Timber Tech’ at the Craig Mountain Supervisory Area since May, 2009. His primary duties are the set-up and administration of timber sales and various forest management projects.
