Be Prepared for the Weather!
As you all know, the spring weather in northern Idaho can be very unpredictable. Please encourage participants to bring extra warm clothes in layers, and water-proof shoes or boots if possible. Also bring rain gear - just in case. The weather can change quickly. Tents will be set up at each station, but coaches are encouraged to bring large garbage bags to be used as raincoats for students who forget to bring rain gear.
What To Bring
Participants should bring two pencils, a clipboard, a calculator and a water bottle. Clipboards can be made using thin board, a clip on the end and a piece of acetate to cover the test in case of rain.
Honorary Chairman for 2011 – Senator Shawn Keough
Congratulations to Senator Shawn Keough, this year’s Honorary Chairman. Senator Keough has been a tremendously active member of the forestry family and a strong supporter of the Forestry Contest for over 23 years. In 1989 Shawn was hired to help create and build the Timber Information Program for the Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce. As the program manager, she helped to start North Idaho Timberfest, the Timberfest Injured Loggers Fund and the Bonner County Chapter of Idaho Women in Timber and she organized publicity and volunteered at the Forestry Contest. She maintains an active role in the Injured Loggers Fund and Idaho Women in Timber at the state level. In 2000 she became the executive director of the non-profit Associated Logging Contractors of Idaho.
Senator Keough is now serving her 8th term in the Idaho Senate. While in office she has been a delegate to the 7th American Forest Congress in Washington, D.C. and an Idaho representative to the Western Legislative Forestry Task Force (currently, she’s an alternate representative). In January of this year she was appointed by Governor Otter to the Western Governors Association Forest Health Advisory Committee, which has a strong voice in implementing restoration forestry. Shawn received the Public Service Award from the Association of Consulting Foresters in 2001 and the Don MacKenzie Award from the Intermountain Logging Conference in 2010.
Thank you, Senator Shawn Keough, for your many years of dedication to forestry education, the forest industry, forest management and the Idaho State Forestry Contest!
