Hazardous Fuels Treatment (HFT) Program on non-federal lands

Timeline for the 2004 grant cycle
July 17, 2003 revision

To: IDL Area Supervisors, Idaho's Counties and Communities
From: Idaho Department of Lands
Date: July 21, 2003

The Idaho Department of Lands is pleased to announce that funds may once again be available for the Hazardous Fuels Treatment (HFT) program for non-federal lands for 2004. This memo describes the process to be utilized at the local level to potentially access available funds.

It is important to note that grants are uncertain and highly competitive. The focus for this program is to assist Idaho's Counties and Communities at risk from wildland fire with the reduction of hazardous fuels on non-federal land, to create and maintain "defensible space" in the wildland urban interface and to reduce the potential adverse effects of wildland fire, should it occur.

Following is a description of the 2004 Grant Cycle:

  • September 15 - Counties and Communities - 2004 Grant Application due to Idaho Department of Lands Area Supervisors. Area Supervisors names and addresses, grant objectives, criteria and applications available at www.idaho.gov/lands
  • October 1 - IDL Area Supervisors - submit reviewed grant applications from Counties and Communities to Mike Tennery, HFT Manager, at the IDL Coeur d'Alene office. (Review guidance to Area Supervisors will be sent under separate cover).
  • October 1-3 - IDL HFT Manager, Fire Plan Coordinator, Bureau Chief - Review submitted grant applications to see if any may qualify for other available assistance programs in Idaho, such as the "Hazardous Fuels Reduction Work Near National Forest Lands" program
  • October 6-10 - Idaho State Fire Plan Working Group - Review and prioritize grant application
  • October 17 - IDL HFT Manager - submit applications to the Western State Fire Managers (WSFM) Competitive Grant Program
