The Land Board and IDL have statutory authority to administer geothermal leases on more than 3.4 million acres of state endowment trust land mineral estate granted to the state in trust at statehood in 1890. IDL also issues and administers geothermal leases for mineral estates held by other state agencies, including Fish and Game, Parks and Recreation, and Transportation.
Revenue generated from geothermal leasing provides vital funding to the endowment beneficiaries, including Idaho’s public schools. Idaho’s constitution requires IDL to maximize the revenue generated from these lands for the beneficiaries.
Any individual, company, or governmental agency that wishes to develop geothermal resources on state-owned mineral estates must first obtain a geothermal lease from IDL.
