About Forestry

We work in partnership with private forest landowners and local communities to improve forest health and protect water quality for the benefit of all Idahoans. We support active and sustainable forest management to support timber markets, reduce wildfire risk, and limit the impacts from insects and disease, all to enhance the resilience of forest landscapes. Additionally, we collaborate with federal, state, and local partners to manage and protect Idaho’s forests and rangelands.

Landowner Assistance

IDL Private Forestry Specialists provide assistance to help forest owners maintain their property, create and enhance forest habitat and maximize financial benefits.

Forest Health

We provide technical assistance and training to private landowners and forest managers, designed to minimize insect and disease risk and prevention.

Forest Legacy

Idaho’s Forest Legacy Program recognizes that in order to protect all forest values and the benefits that society derives from forested lands it is first necessary to maintain those lands as forests.

Shared Stewardship

Idaho is addressing more than 6 million acres of Idaho forestlands that are designated as high-risk for potential catastrophic wildfire and insect and disease outbreaks.

Good Neighbor Authority

Partnering with the Forest Service to achieve restoration and resilient landscape objectives and to increase the pace and scale of forest and watershed restoration activities.

Forest Practices

We provide assistance to landowners to establish healthy, sustainable forests and to promote compliance with the Idaho Forest Practices Act.

Urban and Community Forestry

Trees provide many benefits in urban settings. We help with ordinance creation to program development to ways to use trees and community forest canopy to save energy, reduce soil erosion and more.

Idaho Lands Resource Coordinating Council

The advisory body to the Idaho Department of Lands in developing the Forest Action Plan, administering Idaho’s State and Private Forestry programs, and crafting grant applications.

Forestry Contest

This hands-on event provides Idaho’s youth with an invaluable opportunity to explore forestry and natural resource professions.
