ATHOL, Idaho — The Idaho Department of Lands (IDL), in proud partnership with the Bonner Soil & Water Conservation District (BSWCD), hosted another successful Idaho State Forestry Contest at Farragut State Park on May 8, 2025. The event marked the 42nd year of this unique, hands-on forestry and natural resource education experience for Idaho youth.

Two hundred twenty students from across the state competed in a variety of forestry-related stations that tested their skills in tree and plant identification, log scaling, compass and pacing, soil and water quality, tool identification, and more. These events simulate real-world forestry work and promote critical thinking and teamwork, helping students connect with Idaho’s rich natural resource heritage.

“This contest brings together education, career exploration, and stewardship,” said Idaho Department of Lands Director Dustin Miller. “It would not be possible without the close collaboration with the Bonner Soil & Water Conservation District and the support of hundreds of dedicated volunteers and donors.”

The contest is a community-driven event that relies on the commitment of over 250 volunteers, many of whom are forestry professionals, educators, and conservationists. Their efforts ensure students leave the event inspired and better informed about potential careers in forestry, conservation, and natural resources.

Thanks to generous sponsorships and the continued support of the University of Idaho College of Natural Resources, winners received cash prizes and scholarship opportunities. The College awarded scholarships of up to $1,000 to top senior finishers who plan to attend as full-time students this fall.

“Students don’t just learn at this event—they experience the forest as a classroom,” said Sarah Garcia, BSWCD Executive Director. “This contest is a springboard for young people to discover a passion for natural resources.”
